Portuguese Style of Knitting History Traditions and Techniques Andrea Wong 9780615364896 Books
This is a slender volume that teaches the basics of Portuguese knitting as well as some of its history. The author is well known as the leading advocate of this style of knitting and the book does a good job of introducing the basics (knit and purl stitches) along with the additional techniques you'll need to really use this method of knitting (e.g. increases, yarn overs, knit two together, etc.)For those unfamiliar with Portuguese knitting, it involves looping your yarn to a pin on the front of your shirt/blouse or around your neck. This puts the yarn in front (English and Continental knitting has the yarn in back of your work). The advantage of having the yarn in front is two fold. First, it makes purling very easy and quick. Second, it uses your thumbs primarily. This latter advantage is particularly useful for folks with arthritis or (in my case) carpal tunnel.
You can find numerous how-to videos for this style of knitting (including some by the author). However, I find it handy to have this book with the still images. It is also much quicker to find the page in the book about increases than to find and watch a video. Additionally, there is little of the history and culture around this style of knitting in these videos.
So for all these reasons, I recommend the book. I loaned it to a friend who found it helpful after my preliminary instruction.
The one thing she couldn't find was how to properly maintain tension if she used a pin (if you loop the yarn around your neck, that friction provides sufficient tension for most knitters). Here is the tip - on your off hand (your right in most cases) where you first have the yarn coming from your ball, loop the yarn through your fingers and then up through the pin.

Thank you
Wonderful book filled with history and great instructions.
Andrea Wong is a great teacher. This book was bought to supplement the class I took and I reference it often.
Excellent book by a talented knitter. Well written, good illustrations, very interesting read
I love this style of knitting. My hands were really hurting after knitting the English style and now the only thing I move is my left thumb and no pain in my hands
I like to knit, but arthritis is setting in and it hasn’t been quite as enjoyable lately. I love this technique and it was so easy to transition to this style of knitting. I didn’t order the dvds, but there excellent teaching videos on line to help when I just didn’t ‘get it’. I am also a dedicated crocheter but have put them away for now. This technique is my new obsession. I would recommend this book if you are considering this type of knitting, and just aren’t sure yet.
I recently took a class in Portuguese Knitting so I ordered this book in order to have pictures of some of the techniques. Honestly, I was a little disappointed in the size of the book for the price I paid. It's less than 1/4 inch thick and definitely "basic." I guess I expected more patterns, instructions, and photos. You can find most of this information online or in her Craftsy Class. But for a person who learns visually, it's probably a good resource.
